Duchess had been with us for over 40 years and hundreds of thousands of people were fortunate to encounter her at the zoo, many being charmed and inspired by her.

Following the enormous and heartfelt response we have received over the past few weeks, we have been thinking about how we can remember our majestic zoo matriarch. Therefore, we have decided to launch a campaign to commission a permanent memorial artwork that will take up residence at the zoo.

From Monday 12th August (which was also World Elephant Day), we are inviting artists to submit their ideas for any possible designs they may have for the memorial sculpture. We have created a set of submission guidelines for artists who would like to send their ideas to us. As long as the guidelines are adhered to, any UK artist can submit their proposal.

Please see the Artist Submission Guidelines here. The deadline for submissions is Friday 4th October 2019.

We’re putting together a panel of key people, including keepers who knew Duchess better than anyone, to choose a suitable design for the memorial following the submissions. The winning sculpture design will be selected by Friday 29th November 2019.

Duchess Memorial Campaign

To help fund the memorial sculpture for Duchess, we are also launching a Duchess Memorial Campaign - so that you can contribute to and feel part of this special, commemorative project.

If you would like to donate to the campaign, you can do so here:-
Official Duchess Memorial Campaign Fund via Virgin Money Giving.

If we raise more money than we need for the memorial, the extra funds will go directly towards to our forest elephant conservation project in Nigeria, where this elusive species roams the Omo Forest Reserve.

The current total raised for the campaign so far is just over £1900!

We feel that art is a wonderful way to remember Duchess and would like to thank you all again for your ongoing support, any sculpture submissions and your generous donations.
