TIGER-INSPIRED CRAFT BEER RAISES FUNDS FOR ZOO CONSERVATION PROJECT
Paignton Zoo and Bays Brewery have teamed up to launch a tiger-themed beer, with proceeds helping to fund enclosure improvements for critically endangered big cats.
Paignton Zoo announced Thursday that “Claw,” a copper-coloured pale ale inspired by its Sumatran tigers, will go on sale 21 April. The 4.3 percent brew, described as having “fierce” citrus flavours, represents the twelfth collaboration between the zoo and the family-run brewery.
The partnership has generated £28,500 for wildlife conservation efforts since its inception in 2013. Five percent from each pint sold will support renovations to the exhibit housing sisters Carrie and Padme, Paignton Zoo’s Sumatran tigers.
Brewery staff have also been volunteering their time to help restore the tigers’ swimming pool. Once completed, visitors will be able to observe the rare big cats swimming.
Peter Salmon, Director of Bays Brewery, commented:
“We are delighted to be teaming up again in 2025 with ‘Claw’ – a beer that packs a real punch – bold, refreshing, and brewed for a brilliant cause. Our partnership with Paignton Zoo began way back in 2013 and it has always been about more than just brewing great beer together – it’s about helping protect some of the world’s most incredible wildlife.”
Steph Dawson, Business Development Manager for Paignton Zoo, added:
“We’ve been creating charity brews with Bays since 2013 and our partnership continues to evolve in wonderful ways. This year’s collaboration goes beyond fundraising to include hands-on support for our tiger habitat.”
The zoo have added that there will be more tiger-related news to come later in the year, and the proceeds from ‘Claw’ sales will directly support the renovations to the enclosure. The limited-edition beer will be available while stocks last in selected local pubs, the Paignton Zoo gift shop, and online at baysbrewery.co.uk.
