Paignton Zoo mourns the loss of eldest giraffe
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Janica, our beloved Rothschild’s giraffe, on Tuesday 9 December 2025.
At 20 years old, Janica had been experiencing age-related health decline. Our animal care team made the difficult but compassionate decision to euthanise her to prevent further suffering.
Janica arrived at Paignton Zoo in 2008 from Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic, where she was born on 29 June 2005. During her time with us, she became a much-loved member of our giraffe herd and mother to Eliska. Recognisable as the palest and smallest of our giraffes, Janica had a gentle nature and played an important role within the herd alongside her daughter Eliska and Eliska’s half-sisters, Ottilie and Florrie.
Rothschild’s giraffes are endangered in the wild, with fewer than 3,000 individuals remaining. Every animal in our care contributes to the conservation of their species, and Janica’s legacy continues through her daughter.
Ottilie, Florrie, and daughter Eliska appear to be in good health and will continue to be closely monitored by their dedicated team as they adjust to Janica’s absence.
Janica will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and cared for her. The zoo welcomes messages of condolence, which can be shared with Janica’s keeper team.
