We are home to 2 douroucoulis named Diego and Baroo. They arrived at Paignton Zoo in June 2025 from Folly Farm, you can find them in their exhibit in Monkey Heights.
Douroucoulis are native to Central and South America, where they inhabit tropical and subtropical forests. They are the only truly nocturnal monkeys in the world, with large eyes adapted for seeing in low light.
Their diet is omnivorous, consisting mainly of fruits, leaves, flowers, and insects.
Interesting facts!
- Douroucoulis are also known as owl monkeys because of their large, round eyes and flat faces, which give them an owl-like appearance.
- They live in small family groups, usually consisting of a monogamous pair and their offspring.
- These monkeys communicate using a variety of vocalisations, including high-pitched calls and trills.
- Unlike many other primates, the male douroucouli is the primary caregiver for the young, often carrying the infant on his back.
Conservation
Douroucoulis are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN. Their main threats include habitat destruction due to deforestation and illegal pet trade. Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection and responsible breeding programmes in zoos and sanctuaries.
