Adopt a Lion

Adopting a Lion Comes with a Selection of Great Benefits and Helps Us Protect This Vulnerable Species

With our Gold Lion Adoption Pack, you can help us conserve and preserve our lions. You also directly help us care for our resident lions, Boss, Simira, and Amahle. This sibling trio was born in August 2021 at Longleat Safari Park and eventually found their way to their home with us at Paignton Zoo in 2023.

By adopting a lion, you aren’t just contributing to that lion’s care. You’re helping us make a real impact in our ongoing fight to preserve this majestic species and earning yourself great benefits at the same time.

Why Adopt a Lion?

African lions are the iconic big cats. They are native to the sub-Saharan region of Africa, where they roam the grasslands, scrub, and open woodlands. As top predators, lions play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems by hunting prey like antelopes, buffalo, and zebras.

However, lions are currently categorised as ‘vulnerable’ on the International Union for Conservation (IUCN) list of threatened species. Their population has radically dropped over the years due to illegal poaching and habitat loss, which affects their ability to hunt.

Our care of Boss, Semira, and Amahle is part of an ongoing global effort to conserve and protect this vulnerable species. By adopting a lion, you’ll help provide the food, enrichment, and medical care they need to thrive here at the zoo. At the same time, you also help us in raising awareness about the critical conservation efforts needed to protect African lions from extinction.

Choose from our range of adoption packages, with each tier offering great additional benefits for animal lovers.

Fun Facts About Lions

  • Lions are over 2 million years old: They are an ancient species of apex predators that have existed for around five times as long as humans.
  • The second cat: Lions are one of the first species of cats to appear as we know them today. They are descended from a species known as ‘Proailurus Lemanensis’ which literally translates to ‘first cats’. This makes them one of the oldest cat species still in existence.
  • Like all cats, lions love boxes: If you own a cat, then you know that boxes are the ultimate gift for your furry friend. What you might not know is that all cats, big and small, share this strange affinity for cardboard.
  • They’re pack animals: Most cats, big or small, are solitary. This means that they rarely interact with each other. Lions are different. They move together in groups called ‘prides’. These groups can range up to 30 lions strong, but in rare cases have been known to go up to 60!
  • Male Lions Rarely Hunt: Most lion prides are fed by the females of the group. While they hunt, the males spend most of their time keeping watch over their territory.
  • They’re big sleepers: Lions will sleep for up to 20 hours a day! Hunting takes a lot of energy out of lions, so they spend most of their time preserving their energy for hunts.

Please note that our adoption packs are only available for UK delivery.

Adoptions apply to the species rather than the individual animals. This is because some of our animals may move to other zoos as part of breeding programmes. If your adopted species moves from our collection, we will advise you, and you will be given the opportunity to transfer your adoption to another species.
